While stationed in the DC area, His role in the infantry allowed him to develop instructional skills, from teaching ceremonial drill to delivering classroom lectures, even though he wasn't directly involved in animal handling there. His connection with animals, especially dogs, has been a lifelong affair; growing up, he took an active role in training his family dogs, finding immense satisfaction in the process.
